PICCs, Tunneled Catheters and Dialysis Catheters
PICCs
A PICC, or peripherally inserted central catheter, is a special kind of IV that can stay in for up to 6 weeks. PICCs are often used for chemotherapy and antibiotics. A long thin tube is inserted into an arm vein using ultrasound and X-ray guidance.
Tunneled Catheters
A tunneled catheter, also known as a Hickman catheter or Broviac catheter, is a special kind of IV that can stay in indefinitely. Tunneled catheters are often used for blood draws, chemotherapy, antibiotics, IV nutrition and long-term infusions. A long thin tube is inserted into a neck or chest vein using ultrasound and X-ray guidance. A portion of the tube is tunneled under the skin for a short distance, which decreases infections and increases stability.
Dialysis Catheters
A dialysis catheter is a special type of tunneled catheter that is larger and can accommodate the high flow rates needed for hemodialysis. These are also sometimes called Davol catheters. Tunneled dialysis catheters can stay in indefinitely. Like other catheters, a long, thin tube is inserted into a neck or chest vein using ultrasound and X-ray guidance. A portion of the tube is tunneled under the skin for a short distance, which decreases infections and increases stability.
